23-26 October 2008.
It's a national and international celebration of lesbian writing, arts and culture, taking place in York, England. The festival started out as The Diva Books roadshow in 2000 which turned into the Lesbian Book Festival in 2001 (400 people). In 2002 it was the York Lesbian Pride Weekend in 2002 and the Libertas Arts Festival in 2003. The festival has been called the York Lesbian Arts Festival since 2005. YLAF Festivals continue to vary in size from year to year. With up to 4,000 people there, mostly lesbians, its the biggest lesbian event in Europe.
On 23 October the Love Lottery games night will be held at York Racecourse. On 24th October there will be a Book Festival running most of the day at the Racecourse, followed by a Concert at the Grand Opera House. On 25th October the Book Festival continues all day at York Racecourse, followed by a Disco/Club Night.
The York Lesbian Arts Festival is staged by a non-profit-distributing company run by LBGT women. For more information see About YLAF. Where can I stay in York? (photo of Nite Street on current site) Most York hotels and B&Bs are lesbian-friendly. The tourist office lists are at www.york.roomcheck.co.uk More info about York and accommodation will be added to this site as the festival approaches under Visiting York.
The focus is on lesbian, bisexual and transgendered writers, musicians and artists, and the vast majority of festival-attendees are women. In 2008 the only 'Women-only' event is the Club Night on Saturday 25th October. Men are welcome as guests at the Love Lottery, Book Festival and Concert.. YLAF's 'women-only' policy includes transpeople. For more information, see A Lesbian Space.
